CRAZY ABOUT VEGIES

We all know that vegies are good for us, so much so that some of us decide to adopt this as a diet plan and a complete lifestyle in the form of vegetarianism.

But with everything there is the right and wrong way to go about it. Basically vegetarianism is the practice of abstaining from the consumption of meat; read meat, poultry, seafood and the flesh of any other animal. For those who adopt this lifestyle for reasons unrelated to dietary concerns this can be extended to any by-products of animal slaughter.

The most common mistake people make when embracing the vegan diet is continuing with the regular SAD (Standard African Diet) while just omitting meat. This means that a person will continue drinking soda, chapatti, ugali, rice etc. At this point we already know that this is unhealthy because of the fact that it will lead to an unbalanced diet.

However specifically in the case of vegetarianism, this will lead to low levels in protein, iron, zinc, and vitamin K2, B12 etc. The right way to go vegan is to make sure you incorporate whole grains, raw fruits and vegetables into your diet. This will ensure you are not just a vegetarian simply because you omit meat but because you envelop vegies into your meals. At the back of our minds when we reminisce about our childhood, there were always vegies served with the food but we always went for the meat before our mothers scolded us. Listen to your inner voice reminding you of your mother’s wise words.

When we start a new diet there is no denying it we want to see results starting yesterday! However generally speaking this is simply not possible, especially when it comes to vegetarianism. Keeping this in mind we should not cut out meat and animal products because this will lead us to renegade on the vegetarianism promise in the first place. If you want vegetarianism to work for you, and yield those positive results you are looking for, it is advised to ease into the transition nice and slow.
