NYAMBURA’S STORY. FROM CHAOS TO CONFIDENCE

I’m Nyambura Ngugi, a 40-year-old proud mum of four incredible kids—16, 14, 12, and 11. How was life back then? Oh, it was a whirlwind! Four babies in five years meant I was constantly on the move, fuelling with a lot of food to produce enough milk! and honestly, I gained a lot of weight in the process. My early photos? Let’s just say they tell a story of motherhood, love, and a bit of overwhelm. I was living in the chaos of breastfeeding, sleepless nights, and a body that felt unfamiliar.
The Wake-Up Call: Realizing I Needed a Change
One day, I couldn’t even take the stairs without feeling like I was about to pass out. Clothes didn’t fit, and I felt sluggish and heavy. My close friend Kristine, kept encouraging me to make a change. I tried running, but at the time I felt I was too heavy. Kristine introduced me to ShaunT’s home workout CDs—T25 and Focus, which I started doing cautiously at first. Slowly but surely, I realized that this wasn’t just about losing weight; it was about reclaiming my strength and health. Fitness has become my new lifestyle and I love it combined with healthy eating!
Finding Joy in Movement: Running and Beyond
Today, I’m a passionate runner. I dedicate at least four days a week to pounding the pavement. And let me tell you—running isn’t just exercise; it’s my therapy. I listen to sermons, pray, and find peace while I run. I want to age gracefully. Plus, I’ve learned to enjoy the small wins: running an extra mile, lifting a little more weight, feeling stronger day by day.
Over time, it has evolved from just trying to shed pounds to a way of life including being mindful about what I eat. My other friend Imms held me accountable about what I ate. She got me taking photos of my food and sending them to her encouraging me to stay on track with my food choices. She has also been a great inspiration in this fitness journey. A combination of movement and healthy food choices have been game changers for me.

Juggling Motherhood, Work, and Self-Care
Balancing my roles as a mum and a professional hasn’t been easy. Early mornings are my secret weapon—those quiet hours when I hit the road for my runs. I’ve also involved my children in my fitness journey; they cheer me on, join me sometimes, and even help organize healthy meals. I’ve accepted that I can’t be perfect, but I can be present as much as I can—showing my kids that prioritizing myself is part of loving them.
Nutrition: Making Smarter Choices
I’ve become more intentional about what goes on my plate. I cut down on carbs like rice and ugali, opting instead for healthier options like cassava, sweet potatoes, and nduma. I’ve also ditched soda and chips—things I used to indulge in without a second thought. Now, I see my body as a temple that I treat with respect through good food and mindful eating.
Staying Motivated: Celebrating Small Wins
When progress slows, I remind myself—this is a lifestyle, not a sprint. Every inch lost, every extra push-up, every moment I choose to move is a victory. Fitness helps me stay mentally sharp, manage stress, and face life’s ups and downs with resilience. It’s incredible how a simple run can clear your mind and boost your mood.

Achievements and the Transformative Power of Fitness
What am I most proud of? It’s how I feel inside and out. I’ve hit personal bests in my half marathons, lifted heavier weights, and become a role model for my children and community. My confidence has skyrocketed, and I carry myself differently—more bold, more alive. Fitness has taught me that health is a lifelong journey, and every step forward counts.
My Advice to Fellow Mums
Start now! Even if it’s uncomfortable, even if it feels hard—don’t wait. Try different things: aerobics, CrossFit, taekwondo, fasting, or whatever excites you. Bring your kids along if you can; make it a family affair. Remember, this journey is about enjoying the process and becoming the best version of yourself. You’re a queen—fasten your crown and own your power. You’ve got this, and God’s got you!
