Faith Gathungu of Events Corner for Kids shares insights about her business, her passion for themed birthday parties and what makes her business tick. Read her story:
“My journey started off in the corporate world while working for East Africa Portland Cement in Finance. I loved organizing birthday parties for colleagues in the office, team building activities and even weddings for colleagues and friends as a hobby.”
I love anything color, décor, design, organizing, planning everything from creating themes to bringing them to life! I am a passionate and driven to excellence entrepreneur, wife and mum of 2 kids with a Master of Management in Development Management from University of Witwatersrand, Bachelors in commerce.
The passion for themed parties grew stronger and stronger and family and friends encouraged me to think of doing it as a business part time. Then I decided to register an Events business in 2002. This I did part time over the weekends as I worked full time.
In 2008 I decided to do a certification course in Events & Wedding planning. This inspired me to grow and diversify the business. I got an opportunity to travel and see a bigger world in more developed countries.
This exposure gave me the confidence to resign from my job and get into full time business. During which I got an opportunity to further my studies in South Africa with the aim of growing my skills in management consulting which I still pursue to date.
On the other hand I had more time to invest in the business which gave me the opportunity to diversify beyond weddings and into kid’s events and baby showers in 2012. The Events Corner 4 kids was born then.
Indeed, today’s mums and dads want to give their kids memorable parties. Birthday parties have become creative from interesting themes, to costumes, décor, food, favors, gift bags to entertainment.
For some parents, the hassle of organizing the party and cleaning after is something they are no longer interested in, parents want to enjoy the festivities instead of running themselves ragged.
Events Corner for Kids specializes in complete tailor made themed parties for kids and teenagers. We offer memorable and professional party services in over 50 themes.
Our Motto is Fun, affordability, hustle free parties for busy mums and dads.
Our parties include stunning décor, set ups with kid’s furniture, dress up parties, dance parties, craft parties, stylish party packs and entertainment.
We are involved in corporate kid’s events like the Churchill kid’s festivals and Concour’s De’legance.
In retrospect, the inspiration for this company came from my love for kids and planning my own kid’s parties.
Just to see the light bulb in the eyes of the little ones makes my day! I wanted something memorable, fun yet giving something new to learn for each team activity the kids do together. The business is now in its 3rd year.
What makes Events Corner for Kids different is the ability to offer diverse themes each with specialized décor that are age appropriate.
We give the kids what they desire and truly make it their party not for dad and mum.
Our uniqueness in the market is that we are a one stop shop and we create a new style for each theme which is different for all our clients. We offer packages that suit all budgets from basic to the most elaborate ones.
Our biggest challenge is the competition we face between offering original quality Disney character accessories with other imported Chinese accessories. The other challenge we have at the moment is finding our own venue to expand and offer our client’s alternatives.
My advice to parents is to make their kid’s parties memorable by planning early to make it hustle free and making it the child’s own choice of theme and ideas. This teaches them to start making decisions early in life.
My long term vision for this company is to have presence in East Africa and to be the best in quality and creativity in the market. I would encourage women who want to go into business to network with other like-minded women and to look for mentors in the same area of specialization.
I have learned to create “me” time-to think and reflect and by making time to exercise at least three times a week. For me, God is the center of my everything and I find strength in the quiet time spend with Him every day. I make time for my kids by dropping them off to school and finding activities they enjoy that we can do together. I make a date once a week with my husband to build on our love life.
Lastly I have a business coach that keeps me accountable and focused on my goals whom I meet once a month.”
